Want to know about this East London borough’s industrial heritage, creative culture, and green spaces? From Stoke Newington’s Georgian architecture to Shoreditch’s tech sector and the Olympic Park at Hackney Wick — keep reading to see what Hackney has to offer.
Hackney lies in Inner London, five miles northeast of Charing Cross, bounded by the River Lea to the east. The modern borough formed in 1965 through the merger of three former metropolitan boroughs: Hackney, Shoreditch, and Stoke Newington, each with distinct histories dating back centuries.
The place name derives from Old English, first recorded as Hakney in 1231 and Hakeneye in 1242, likely meaning ‘Haka’s island’ — referring to raised dry ground between streams where the Hackney Brook and Pigwell Brook once converged. Paleolithic settlements and Roman remains found in Hackney Marshes confirm ancient occupation of this area.
Throughout the medieval period, Hackney remained largely rural with scattered hamlets. Even into the 18th century, the area consisted mainly of pasture and market gardens.
The Tudor period saw wealthy Londoners build country retreats here — Sutton House on Homerton High Street (1535) survives as the borough’s oldest building. St Augustine’s Tower, the medieval parish church remnant, appears on Hackney’s coat of arms.
Hackney’s property stock reflects its layered history. Victorian and Edwardian terraces dominate many streets, built during the 19th-century industrial expansion when the population grew from 20,000 to 200,000. Georgian townhouses appear in conservation areas like Clapton Square and around St John’s Church. Stoke Newington retains pockets of 18th-century architecture.
Later developments include Navarino Mansions (1904), notable Edwardian Arts and Crafts tenement blocks built to house Jewish artisans. The Tudor-era Sutton House (1535) stands on Homerton High Street, while modern warehouse conversions in Shoreditch and Hackney Wick attract professional buyers. Flat conversions in Victorian properties near London Fields and Victoria Park remain popular.
Desirable properties: The best properties cluster around established garden squares and parks. De Beauvoir Town offers tree-lined streets with Regency-style houses and a village-like feel. Roads surrounding Victoria Park, particularly the Victoria Park Village area, feature Victorian villas and terraced properties.
The streets orbiting London Fields — including Broadway Market — combine period housing with thriving local shops and restaurants. Dalston Lane and Stoke Newington Church Street provide sought-after Victorian terraces within walking distance of transport links.
Hackney offers extensive transport options making it well-connected for both City workers and those travelling across London.
Hackney’s history and creative culture provide numerous destinations appealing to those living in or moving to the area.
Hackney’s employment landscape blends traditional sectors with significant growth in digital technology and creative industries. The borough has positioned itself as a key destination for tech companies and startups, particularly in the Shoreditch area, which has become synonymous with London’s technology sector.
Digital technology, health and social care, hospitality, green industries and creative sectors form priority employment areas under Hackney Council’s manifesto commitments. The tech sector shows particular strength — Hackney ranks fourth in the UK for tech jobs with 4,525 technology firms providing employment for 10% of the borough’s workforce.
The concentration of digital marketing, software development, cyber security and web development companies attracts professionals seeking roles in these fields. Major employers span healthcare trusts, education institutions, local government, retail chains, and numerous small to medium enterprises across sectors.
Shopping: Westfield Stratford City shopping centre sits approximately 10 minutes from Hackney Wick, offering over 250 stores including major retailers and restaurants.
Broadway Market runs every Saturday with 150+ stalls selling street food and artisan products, whilst over 70 independent shops, cafes and bars line the street seven days a week. Ridley Road Market in Dalston has operated since the 1880s with 150+ stalls offering international produce, particularly Afro-Caribbean, Asian and European goods. Chatsworth Road Market in Homerton opens Sundays with local traders.
Major supermarkets including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Waitrose have branches across the borough. Mare Street in Hackney Central provides the main shopping thoroughfare with high street chains and independent retailers.
Leisure: Clissold Park offers sports facilities, a playground, fountains, outdoor chess boards and a café. King’s Hall leisure centre on Lower Clapton Road features a gym, pool and fitness classes. London Aquatics Centre at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park provides Olympic-standard swimming facilities open to the public.
The Lee Valley White Water Centre offers canoeing, kayaking and rafting, whilst Lee Valley Ice Centre hosts ice skating. London Fields Lido provides year-round outdoor swimming. Hackney Picturehouse cinema shows mainstream and independent films with special screenings.
