Tower Hamlets occupies a pivotal position immediately east of the City of London, stretching along the north bank of the Thames from Tower Bridge to the Lea Valley. The borough was formed in 1965 from the merger of Bethnal Green, Poplar and Stepney – three areas with distinct working-class histories rooted in dock labour, silk weaving and furniture making.

The name derives from the medieval Tower Division of Middlesex, administrative units that owed service to the Tower of London. For centuries, this was London’s industrial hinterland and port, where successive waves of immigrants – Huguenot silk weavers, Irish labourers, Eastern European Jews, and Bangladeshi families – established themselves, each leaving cultural marks still visible today.

The 1980s closure of the docks left vast tracts of derelict land and industrial buildings. The formation of the London Docklands Development Corporation in 1981 sparked radical transformation. Canary Wharf emerged from former West India Docks to become a second financial district rivalling the Square Mile, now home to HSBC, Barclays, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase among others. Around 105,000 people work in Canary Wharf alone.

The borough displays remarkable range, from Georgian townhouses in Spitalfields and Victorian terraces across Bow and Bethnal Green, to converted warehouses in Wapping and Shoreditch.

Post-war council estates stand alongside glass-clad towers in Canary Wharf and sleek riverside developments on the Isle of Dogs. Warehouse conversions with exposed brick and high ceilings attract creative professionals, while new-build apartments with floor-to-ceiling windows appeal to city workers.

Prime locations: These include the warehouse conversions of Wapping and Shad Thames, Georgian properties around Fournier Street and Princelet Street in Spitalfields, and modern waterfront apartments along Narrow Street in Limehouse.

Victoria Park edges draw families seeking period properties with garden squares, while newer developments around Stratford and Canary Wharf offer contemporary living with extensive facilities.

Tower Hamlets sits in a fortunate position for transport, offering some of London’s newest and fastest connections to Central London and beyond.

  • Car & Road: The A11, A12, and A13 serve the borough, with Limehouse Link tunnel connecting directly to the City. Central London is typically 15-20 minutes by car depending on your starting point, while London City Airport lies just 15 minutes to the east. The Blackwall Tunnel provides quick routes south across the Thames into Greenwich and beyond.
  • Tube: The Jubilee Line runs through Canary Wharf, North Greenwich and Canada Water, connecting the financial district to Westminster in around 15 minutes and Bond Street in 20 minutes. The Central Line serves Bethnal Green, Mile End and Stratford, while the District and Hammersmith & City lines call at Whitechapel, Stepney Green, Bow Road and Mile End.

Tower Hamlets offers residents far more than its working reputation might suggest, with historical landmarks sitting comfortably alongside contemporary cultural spaces.

  • Tower of London – This UNESCO World Heritage site forms the borough’s western boundary and offers residents £1 entry. The fortress houses the Crown Jewels and tells a thousand years of royal history. Morning visits before tourist crowds arrive reveal the ravens and Beefeaters in relative calm.
  • Victoria Park – London’s oldest public park spans 86 hectares with ornamental lakes, sports facilities and hosts major music festivals. The Chinese Pagoda, Victorian fountains and original London Bridge alcoves provide historical interest, while the park serves as a green lung for the dense streets around it, attracting 9 million visits annually.
Tower Bridge – Though often confused with London Bridge, this Victorian Gothic drawbridge opened in 1894 and remains an engineering marvel. Residents enjoy £1 entry to walk the glass-floored high-level walkways and visit the engine rooms that once powered the raising mechanism.
  • Brick Lane – The cultural heart of London’s Bangladeshi community offers far more than curry houses. The Jamme Masjid mosque, originally a Huguenot chapel built in 1743, symbolises the area’s layered immigration history. Sunday markets, vintage shops and street art make it equally popular with creative professionals.

Tower Hamlets presents a divided jobs landscape where global finance sits alongside public services, creative industries and traditional trades.

Canary Wharf dominates the employment picture with around 105,000 workers in financial services and professional services. HSBC, Barclays, Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse maintain major offices, alongside accounting firms KPMG, Ernst & Young and Deloitte. Recent commitments from Visa and continued investment despite some relocations suggest the financial district remains a key employer.

These roles typically require degree-level qualifications and offer high salaries, though only 10% of these positions are held by borough residents.

Queen Mary University of London employs significant numbers in education and research at its Mile End campus, with particular strengths in medicine, law and humanities.

The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel stands as one of London’s largest teaching hospitals, providing healthcare jobs across all skill levels.

Living in Tower Hamlets means having London’s traditional East End and its modern financial centre within walking distance, creating an unusual mix of facilities.

  • Shopping: Westfield Stratford City sits at the borough’s northern edge, offering 250 shops including John Lewis and Marks & Spencer. Canary Wharf’s underground shopping mall provides high street names and restaurants beneath the office towers. Brick Lane Market trades Sundays for vintage clothing and bric-a-brac, while Petticoat Lane Market (actually on Middlesex Street) continues its 400-year textile trading tradition. Roman Road Market in Bow offers affordable everyday goods six days weekly. For groceries, large Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda stores serve different neighbourhoods, with smaller branches throughout.
  • Leisure: The John Orwell Sports Centre in Wapping offers swimming pools, gym and courts. Mile End Climbing Wall provides bouldering and rope climbing in a converted parking structure. Poplar Baths reopened in 2016 as a community leisure centre after restoration. Canary Wharf hosts free outdoor events including big-screen sports, outdoor cinema and seasonal festivals in Jubilee Park and Crossrail Place Roof Garden.
